Sense launches Benefits Charter
Recent research by Sense into the experiences of people with disabilities when claiming benefits has concluded that the current system is 'letting disabled people down every day'. The charity proposes a new charter for fairer access, design and provision of a benefits system that puts disabled people at its heart.
The charter is based around five key principles:
- A fully accessible, co-produced system
- A simpler application process
- Benefits rates that allow disabled people to afford the essentials and have a decent standard of living
- Support for disabled job seekers
- Recognition of the role of the benefits system in enabling people to live independently
