Road safety improvements in Cardiff City Centre

A major project to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists in Cardiff city centre starts next Monday (February 23). It follows detailed discussions between Guide Dogs Cymru, RNIB Cymru and Cardiff Council. These reflected the safety concerns of local blind and partially sighted people, particularly around the creation of bus stop boarders in the Cardiff Castle and Kingsway areas, which meant that passengers had to cross a live cycle lane to get on or leave the bus. These were installed as a temporary measure in 2020.

Work will begin outside the Hilton Hotel and take a year to complete. A key feature of the design will be a central, controlled push-button crossing enabling bus users to safely cross the cycleway and wait for their bus in the bus shelters on the island. There will also be two zebra crossings that lead to the bus island, plus signage to encourage cyclists to slow down. Pedestrian routes will be kept open throughout and bus stops will remain available wherever possible. The temporary pop-up cycleway will be upgraded to a permanent cycleway that is separated from the footway and on a different level.

Andrea Gordon, External Affairs Manager for Guide Dogs, said: “This project follows more than seven site visits in three years, an access audit conducted by an experienced access consultant, and many online and face-to-face discussions. Local blind and partially sighted people were directly involved, providing invaluable insight into the difficulties created by the bus boarders, and the risk of collision with cyclists. I’d like to thank everyone for their involvement, including officers from Cardiff Council who have worked with us to achieve a much safer and more inclusive design. We know that the work to install the new arrangements will be disruptive but please get in touch using the contact details provided if you have any queries or difficulties during this time.”
