Patients in Wales receive CVI from their local optometrist
Following the introduction of a new optometry contract in Wales, 101 patients have been given a Certificate of Vision Impairment (CVI) from their local optometrist, rather than having to visit a hospital.
Around one in five (18%) of these certifications were performed as a mobile assessment in the patient’s own home. As well as being more convenient for patients, the availability of certification closer to home reduces the load on hospital eye clinics, and has been welcomed by Wales Council of the Blind's director, Owen Williams, Wales General Ophthalmic Services national clinical lead, Rebecca John and Chief optometric adviser for Wales, David O’Sullivan. Possession of a CVI can give access to financial benefits, such as the Blind Person's Tax Allowance.
