Blind Person's Tax Allowance - how to make a claim

RNIB has welcomed the announcement in the Chancellor's Autumn Statement that the Blind Person's Tax Allowance, which is added to an individual’s tax-free Personal Allowance, will be increased next year in line with September’s inflation rate of 10.1%.

People in Wales and England can claim Blind Person’s Allowance if both of the following apply:

  • You are registered with your local council as blind or severely sight impaired
  • you have a certificate that says you’re blind or severely sight impaired (or a similar document from your doctor)
The allowance isn't given automatically, so you must make an application.

RNIB's website has more information, and their Tax Advice Service (on 0303 123 9999) can help you make a claim.
