Description: In recent years, we have seen a decline in the number of vision rehabilitation officers in Wales. As a result, many blind and partially sighted people are failing to receive the vision rehabilitation support that they need in a timely manner. This crucial support reduces the pressure on other services such as health and wider social care services. We are already under-resourced in this field and there are no clear plans for workforce renewal. With the number of blind and partially sighted people expecting to increase by 32% by 2030 and double by 2050 this situation will worsen dramatically if no action is taken. It is essential that local authorities invest in this workforce now. This paper outlines the problem in more detail and asks that Local Authority Social Care departments address the situation as a matter of urgency.
