BBC investigates unproven treatments for RP
A programme on the BBC World Service reports on an investigation into unproven treatments for retinitis pigmentosa (RP). 'Blind faith: Do genetic eye disease ‘treatments' work?' shows that the new treatments do not work, and can cause harm.
Retina UK, the charity supporting people with inherited sight loss, has issued a statement in support of the programme, saying that 'it highlights a really significant and concerning issue that impacts families living with rare diseases, including inherited sight loss'. It urges anyone considering a therapy they find online to discuss it with their regular ophthalmologist or GP before proceeding.
