Welsh Government announces changes to cut eye care waiting times

NHS waiting lists have increased significantly due to the pandemic. The Welsh Government has now announced plans to reduce the wait for people with urgent or complex eye cases to be seen in hospital, by carrying out eye care treatments within a primary care setting.

The impact of the delays on patients is highlighted in a report by ITV Wales, in which a patient from Newport speaks about her fears that delays in having the pressure in her eyes checked could cause her to lose her sight. You can read the ITV report here.

The Welsh Government has announced plans to tackle the backlog, which include the establishment of the NHS Wales University Eye Care Centre in Cardiff, a new operating theatre to be dedicated to ophthalmology procedures in Swansea, and the use of community clinics in Cwm Taf Morgannwg, and Hywel Dda Health Boards, on their website.
