Changes to the Highway Code raise concerns

Changes to the Highway Code were introduced in England, Scotland and Wales on 29th January 2022. Although the aim of the changes is to improve the safety of people walking and cycling, the Guide Dogs organisation has raised concerns that they could be dangerous for vision impaired people, particularly in the early days.

Drivers and cyclists must now give way if a pedestrian is waiting to cross a road they are turning into, but a person with sight loss won't be able to see whether it is safe to proceed. There was a discussion about the issues on BBC Radio 4's In Touch programme. You can listen to the programme, and read a transcript of the discussion here. Guide Dogs has also issued a list of Q&As on the changes, which you can read here.
