Useful resources for new students

The new academic year starts soon, so here is a reminder of some of the useful resources for new students with a vision impairment.

LOOK's Student's Handbook is a survival guide for anyone who is vision impaired and heading off to University (or some form of Higher Education) this autumn. It has advice on a wide range of topics including identifying your support needs, the Disabled Students' Allowance, technology and orientation. It also includes a recommended timetable for those intending to apply to University in the future, and details of LOOK's mentoring scheme. You can find out more and read the Student's Handbook here.

The Thomas Pocklington Trust's 'Life in Higher Education' has advice on studying, support, health and wellbeing, and student housing. You can read it here.

VICTA has a Student Helpline, which can provide support and advice on a wide range of issues facing vision impaired students. It is open on Thursday afternoons from 2 pm to 4 pm, and the number to call is 01908 240831. You can also get help by sending an email to students@victa.org.uk. For more information, visit VICTA's website.

For a more personal view, the 'Life of a Blind Girl' blog has tips and advice from Holly, a recent graduate with sight loss.

Wales Council of the Blind's RESET pages also have some useful information about education and vision impairment.
