Patients' experience of eye care in Wales - survey results published

The Board of Community Health Councils in Wales has published the findings of a national survey asking patients about their experience of eye care. The majority of people who spoke to Community Health Council members gave a positive description of the care and treatment they had received, but the report identifies areas where further work is needed to ensure that everyone accessing ophthalmology services benefits from high standards of care and treatment.

A proportion of patients reported experiencing delays in accessing treatment and others gave account of cancelled or postponed appointments. In some cases people reported that they had experienced a deterioration in their condition whilst waiting for their treatment to begin. Patients were also unclear who to contact when they had concerns about their condition or the treatment they were receiving.

The Community Health Councils are now calling on Health Boards to take action to reduce the number of patients whose treatment is delayed and ensure that any patient with a concern knows how to access support.
