Lords report on Equality Act find that needs of disabled people are ignored

The House of Lords has produced a report on the way that the Equality Act 2010 is working in practice, and has found that much more needs to be done. Transport, inaccessible buildings and communications are all areas which need to improve.

Although government and public authorities have a duty to “have due regard” to the need to eliminate discrimination and advance equality of opportunity, this wording allows them to consider all the evidence, but still to pursue plainly discriminatory policies.

Issues mentioned in the report which will be familiar to people with vision impairment include lack of audio announcements on buses, difficulties in obtaining information in an accessible format, and the introduction of 'shared spaces'. However, while not perfect, the report did find that the situation in Wales and Scotland 'better meet the Government’s aim of outcome focussed transparency' than was the case in England.
